The History of People of Color Meditation Groups

The first meditation retreat for people of African heritage was held at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in California in 2001. Shortly thereafter, People of Color (POC) meditation groups sprouted at both Spirt Rock and Insight Meditation Center in Barre, Massachusetts.  The groups grew out of a need for African Americans, Latinos and Asians to have their own meditation space as they felt unwelcome and invisible in mainstream white sanghas. Prior to that, they were sitting alone in their homes or in small groups. They wanted to experience the dharma teachings, especially those related to issues that affect people of color, without having to deal with racism or the lack of teachers of color. Today most Buddhist centers in the US have POC retreats and several have training programs for teachers of color. Many people of color start out in POC sits and, once feeling grounded, begin to go to mainstream sits. However, some continue only to attend POC sits. In addition, many centers also offer LGBTG retreats and sits.

Springboard Meditation Sangha exists through the generosity of its participants.
